Powell, Bridges, Smith, Fairess, Webster--Hi, I am looking for anything on the Bridges/Powell's families that lived around Beulah until 1960's. Rebecca Powell and Cane Bridges married and moved to Illinois in the 60's. The older family is still around Beulah or Bolivar county and I would like very much to find the family genealogy/history for my granddaughter's future. Willie Powell and Emma Smith/Fairess was Rebecca's parents and Cane Bridges Sr. and Mary/Mae Webster was Cane Bridges Jr. parents. Also, Rebecca and Cane worked at a farm/plantation at Rt. 1 Box 119 in Beulah. I'd like to find out what the name of the farm was. Rebecca is now buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Beulah, 5 Dec. 1986. I hope to hear from anyone. Thanks. My email: Bunnellloyalist@aol.com 05-04

Hazelwood--My name is Wes Ruth. I am in the 11th grade at Washington Senior High School at Washington C. H., Ohio. Our college prepratory history classes do projects that get local, state, and national recognition. My small group that I work in is transcribing letters and documents about a union soldier. His name is John M. Hazelwood. He served in the U.S. C.T. Heavy Art. He moved to Beulah, Miss in 1871 and left in 1881. He served as a teacher and possibly as one of the notary workers. While in Beulah, he got married to an African American lady by the first name of Mariah. Would it be possible to find out her maiden name? Our end goal is to find out why exactly did the family leave Beulah, Miss, and leave a decent lifestyle, to go to Rendville, Ohio, to work in the newly opened mines. One theory that was developed was that the KKK was involved and could have "spooked" them out or forced them out. It was likely that John M. Hazelwood contracted a disease in the Civil War which made him steril, but this is only another theory and the truth is out there. We thank you for all of your help, and if there is any information you would like, you may email me at any point in time. We have set up a web page for our school, and if you go on it, you can visit our history web page from selecting our hisorty's link buttons. Our school's web page is www.washingtonch.k12.oh.us . Thanks again! Wes Ruth and the students at WSHS, and our teacher, Paul (Lash) LaRue. wes_ziegeusa@yahoo.com 03-04

Cooke, Cassity--I am researching information on the following individual: Medora Cooke, Born: June 1839, Died: ? Married name: Medora Cooke Cassity. Her father settled in Bolivar County sometime around 1832. She had a sister, Eliza Sackville Cooke, who is buried in Burress Cemetery near Benoit, along with possibly her father - William Cooke. Her brother, Slaughter Greene Cooke, was a Confederate soldier who died during the Civil War and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Both Eliza and Slaughter have inscriptions on their tombstones noting the tombstone erected by Medora Cooke Cassity. The 1900 Census has her living in Bolivar County, but I do not know where she moved to, since I do not see any cemetery or death information on her.
