Hill, Hall--My great-grandfather, Dr. Henry Willis Hill (1827-1904), began medical practice in Blackhawk in 1848. He practiced in the vicinity of Blackhawk, Vaiden, and Grenada for about 25 years, except for Civil War surgeon's duty on General Chalmers' staff and later with Col. Fisher's regiment. His wife, Ann Temperance Hall, died in October 1857 and was buried in what was soon to be called The Yellow Fever Cemetery in Grenada, MS. Dr. Hill and his son, Dr. James Abram Hill, appear on the 1870 census in Limestone County, Alabama, where they set up a joint practice. I'm especially looking for information to indicate when they left Grenada, MS, and spent some time in Memphis, TN, and in Texas (Bastrop?) before settling in Mooresville. Al Hill. I found an Edward Bryant married to Mattie (_____) Bryant on the 1920 census for Lauderdale Co. MS. I am doing census transcriptions for 1910 Lauderdale Co. but have not found the Bryant on it. Maybe they were still in Clarke Co at this time. I know that they lived on either 7th or 8th Ave. in Meridian. If this is true then they had 9 children living in a 3 room house unless they had both sides of the house. I have seen these houses as my aunt lived all her married life in one of these houses. She married into the company store Family, Lynch. Thanks for the info. Fay Roberts. ragley@gulftel.com 08-03

According to the 1880 census, he was 35 years old and was married to 30-year-old Euginie Flowers at that time (both were Mississippi born). These are some of my husband's ancestors. Would you please e-mail me to let me know if the records are available and whom I need to contact to get some of this looked up? Thank you. Cochran, Cagle--Robert C. Cochran, born 4 Nov 1814, Boston, MA; died 26 Aug 1886, Attala or Carroll County, MS; married (possibly) to Fannie S. (Unknown) Cagle; buried Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery, Carmack Community, Attala County, MS. This Robert C. Cochran taught school in the old Rocky Point School that between 1871 and the early 1900s was located just south of what is now county road 440 in Attala County, just about four or five miles west of Hesterville. Robert C. Cochran was born in or near Boston, Massachusetts, was highly educated as he taught Greek, Latin and higher mathematics and taught in the old Rocky Point School between 1871 and 1873. His burial in the Shiloh Methodist Church cemetery in 1886 indicates that he was a member of that church. I have checked to see if the Shiloh Methodist Church still maintains church membership records going back to the 1870s-1880s and, regrettably, they no longer have records this old. When the 1880 census was taken, Robert C. Cochran was living in the C. M. MCLury household in "Midway, Carroll County, Mississippi" (1880 Census page 180D). The book, Mississippi Marriage Records, compiled by Betty C. Wiltshire, mentions that Marriage Record Book 2A, 1878-1885, page 152 contains the entry, "Cochron or Cochran, R. C. to Cagle, Fannie S., 15 Aug 1880." Although very likely, it is not a certainty that this R.C. Cochron or Cochran is the same person as the Robert C. Cochran I seek information on. The book, CAGLE Families in the Southern States, claims on page 131 that an R. C. Cochran was married to a Fannie S. (Unknown) Cagle and that Fannie S. (Unknown) had previously been married to a Wesley Cagle. This is all the information I currently know about the Robert C. Cochran I am trying to identify. I am most interested in who his wife or wives were, who his parents were, if he had any children by his wife or wives and when he first arrived in the Carroll / Attala County area. Any help you Carroll County researchers might be able to provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks much ! Regards, Dennis K. Boswell, 301 Crow Canyon Drive, Folsom, CA 95630. Telephone: (916) 987-3599, Fax: (916) 987-3555. Email: dennisb@mindspring.com 08-01
Wimberly, Boyce, Benton--I am desperately trying to verify the wife of William Lee Elijah Wimberly [Lee Wimberly]. I have seen it listed as both Patro Boyce and as Payton Benton. Dates 1860-1933. There are Bentons [T. H. and Pairlee] buried in the Old Salem Cemetery in Vaiden but no Boyce's. I have no record of Boyce's in Carroll County. Is anyone able to help? Thank you in advance! cathy163@pacbell.net 08-01
Dunn, Hackney--My ancestors originated in NC then MS then TX. I am seeking assistance in finding the birth certificate(s) of the following and the marriage license of Andrew Jackson Dunn and Lean (Unknown last name) Dunn. Andrew Jackson Dunn was born to Pleasant Dunn & wife in Carroll County, MS. His first wife was Lean (????) Dunn. Their children were: William Melton Dunn born in April 1876 or there about, Rosa Lee Dunn was born in Carroll County (I think), and Genia Dunn was born in Carrol County also (I think). All that I truthfully know about Thomas Dunn is that he married in NC about 1790 (Aug 13) I believe. Have found no definite connections prior to that time since I do not know his father's or mother's name. His wife was Nancy Hackney and they are both buried near greenwood, MS, as I recall. Thank You Tommy Dunn. nighthawk@door.net 08-99
