Epperson--My Great-Grandfather and his family are listed in the 1880 Lee County, Mississippi census as follows:  Page No. 59, Supervisor's Dist. No. 1, Enumeration Dist. No. 87. Line 17:   Epperson, Jas., Age 26, Born: Virginia; Epperson, Martha, Age 23, Born: Alabama; Epperson, V. V., Age 2, Born: Mississippi; Petty, Nancy, Age 60, Born: Georgia, Mother-in-law.  Jas. Is short for James T. Epperson.  I also know that my Grandfather, Joseph Theophilus Epperson and his twin brother, Robert Epperson were born in Lee County on January 24, 1881.  Jame T. Epperson was born in Wythe County, VA in 1854.  I have been unable to track them in the 1860 or 1870 census.  They were in Kingsland, Texas by 1891.  I have been unable to locate any other info about them while they were in Lee County.  I plan to visit the Tupelo area on June 28, 2004.  The only local genealogy resources in Lee County that I can find on the Internet are:  Chancery Clerk, 200 W Jefferson St, Tupelo, MS  (662) 841-9100.  NE Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society, P.O. Porter-1, Armstrong, McWilliams, McDonald, Young, Champion, Senter, Ellis, Henderson--Lesly Porter and Sarah Armstrong Porter were married in Itawamba Co, but some of their children or their descendants may still live in the area.  1)  Robert D. Porter (1851) married  Dec 19, 1877 to Alice McWilliams.  We have no names for the children.  2)  Bro. Jim Porter (James L. Porter born 1853) and Lou Porter lost a baby in Alvarado, Johnson, TX.  Is this James L. who married Nov 5, 1875 to M. L. (Mary Lou?) McDonald?  Does anyone know? "Jim" James Leslie Porter and M. Lou McDonald were married Nov 05, 1875, Lee Co, MS.  A child, Mamie Bell Porter was buried at 2 years Jul 14, 1882, Alvarado, Johnson, TX.  A son, Foster M. Porter was born Dec 04, 1889, OK and d Sep 17, 1950 in Butte, Chico, CA.  Is there a kinship between the Fosters and McDonalds and/or Porters in Lee County?  A Foster M. Porter was listed  in 1970 records for the same county; could be a son.  3)  Charles A. Porter (what surname starts with A?) born Jan 22, 1855, married  1st, Roberta _____,  married 2nd to Mattie Young?  Someone has researched this Porter son, and knows his actual birthdate.  Who could share this information, please?  4)  As a combined cousins' effort, we've found John A. Champion & Leah Champion and their family;  Ida J Porter & Z. T. Champion.  who arrived in Alvarado, TX on the day that they were married.  Most of the family members moved to Snyder, TX and are buried there.  5)  Our WILLiam Armstrong Porter and Addie Senter and their family moved from Alvarado, Johnson, TX, to Tulia, Swisher, TX (on the plains), and most are buried there.  6)  Then the baby, Eva Sarah Porter, married twice in Alvarado, once to Thomas Jefferson Ellis, and after his murder, to James E. Henderson.  Have photos and letters from Aunt Ev. as well as her family tree.  If anyone has a clue or suggestion about  Robert, James, or Charles,  we would enjoy hearing from you?   VB in NM.  laneglenn@wildblue.net    05-04

Shannon, Long--I am looking to locate and find anyone related to Frank Shannon and Betty Long-Shannon, from Lee County, MS.  They are the parents of Cureatus Shannon, born March 1, 1892 and died August 13,1928.  I am seeking to find any relatives and information that can be offered.  He was in the Army, Transportation Corps. for WWII.  Any help anyone can offer will be sincerely appreciated.  Shannon C. Shoemaker--I am searching for information on Charles Shoemaker, born about 1859 in Pennsylvania.  I have recently received obituaries for his parents, John S. Shoemaker and Dorothy Shoemaker, who died in Lima, Allen County, Ohio.  In both articles, Charles was listed in Tupelo, Mississippi.  His mother died in 1909 and his father in 1911.  I would appreciate any information available on him and his family.  Thanks in advance.

Foster--Doing research on Foster Family who lived in Lee County in 1880.  On the 1880 Census listed as living in District 94, Beat 5, Lee Mississippi. Foster's from South Carolina.  John Francis Marion Foster was a twin to my great grandfather George W. Foster of Logan, Reynolds Co., in Missouri.  Children Listed on 1880 census... James P. Foster, Orlander B. Foster, George P. Foster, and John M. K. Foster.  Foster family came to Mississippi from Clinton, South Carolina.  Any help in my search would be appreciated.  Name and address of genealogy or historical society would be nice.  Donna Foster.  donna1955@iwon.com   10-03

Ferrell/Farrell--Great, Great grandfather and grandmother buried in the Red Hill Cemetery near Guntown.  Andrew Jackson Farrell and Oliva Farrell, buried 5-10-1911 and Oliva is 1886.  Have decendants still living near there.  Need to know if records indicate the father's name forAndrew Jackson Farrell.  aldretes@cybertrails.com    09-03

Ray, Hipps--I am searching for any information on an Anderson Ray, married to a Nancy Hipps.  The information comes from the Death Certificate of my Grandfather. Joe C. Ray who died in Poteau, Oklahoma in 1935.  The Death certificate lists his birthplace as Guntown, MS, on April  01, 1879.  It furthers states that his parents were Anderson Ray and Nancy Hipps.  I have searched the 1880 census and can find no mention of either of these names.  Nor any mention of any of the Ray's I did research as having a son named Joe C. Chism-1--I was wondering if you know anything about the Chism's who came from Scotland and one settled in Splunge.  Not sure what there names were but my GGGrandfather was William Eugene Chism and his father was William Chism and he had  5 boys and one girl:  Dave Chism, Jim Chism, Bud Chism, Gene or Eugene Chism, Clovis Chism, and the girl was  Matt Chism.  I don't know what that is short for. Temples--Trying to find  the grave of Pvt Needham H Temples who died on 20 Oct 1862, in a Hospital.  He was in the 37th Infantry, Co E Shubuta Guards of Clarke Co.  Records shows they mustered at Columbus and when on to Saltillo in July and August, where he became sick.  Do you have any way to see if he is buried in your area??? or maybe you could direct me in the right direction.  Really appreciate your help.  Tom Temple  Biloxi.  Tjtemple@aol.com     04-03

Mayfield, Sparks--I am looking for Margaret Mayfield born about 1887 father possibly  Carroll Mayfield born 1854 and mother Mary E. Bullard, Raper, Holley--Does anyone know if there is a Lee County Marriage Book and/or a Lee County Cemetery Book?  Also, where would I write to get copies of marriage certificates and death records in Lee County?  I am researching the Bullard, Raper, Holley families and I know some of them were in Lee Co. in the late 1800s.  Others moved to Prentiss Co.  Would appreciate any help on obtaining information on my families.  lynfig@comcast.com    02-03

Pennington, Hardin--I am looking for data on Penningtons. I have been told that my father was born in Tupelo, MS.  Name: Obeedy Washington Pennington.  7 Mar 1905 to an Isaac Newton Pennington. Mother, Lulu Elizabeth Hardin.  Is there a way of locating records there that confirm this fact that will not cost an arm, much less an arm and a leg?  Thanks.  Nelson E. Jones, Ewing, Johnson--I hope that you can help me find any information pertaining to my great grandparents and their families.  I live in Illinois and my father was an only child and he is deceased.  Here is what I know.  As a child (back in the fifties) we visited relatives in the Amory, MS area.  My grandfather, Charles Thornton Jones died when my father, James A. Jones, was 19. They lived in Springfield, IL.  On the Mormon website I found a marriage listing for Charles S. Jones and Carrie Ewing on August 31, 1871 in Lee (County??), MS.  I am assuming this would be my great grandparents.  Charles S. and Carrie Ewing Jones had the following children:  Ruben Jones, McWhorten Jones, Quintan Jones, Cynthia Jones, Quitman Jones and Charles Thornton Jones, my grandfather.  I remember visiting my father's Aunt, Cynthia Jones Johnson (William Percy Johnson, husband).  They had children.  Also, we visited Quitman Jones and his wife, Bea Jones and their children, Quitman "Ward" Jones, Jr. and Jeanne Jones.  I was a small child, so I remember very little.  If you could direct me I would really appreciate it.  Thank you for your time.  Nancy Jones Ehlert troubles@csj.net  11-02

Presley, Smith--My ancestors are from Monroe County just southeast of Tupelo.  I understand Elvis Presley's mother's name was Gladys from Tupelo and her father was named Robert Lee Smith.  Would you have any info on Robert Lee Smith?  I assume he lived in Lee Co., MS, but I'm not sure.  I cannot find any info on him.  My ancestor was Loyd Costella Smith in Monroe Co., MS, near Amore and Splunge and Smithville.  I cannot find a geanology chart for Elvis.  If anyone can help me see if there is a connection, it would be appreciated.  Thanks, Ross Smith  rossesmith@hotmail.com   12-01

Stewart/Steward/Stuard, Langford--Moody Burt Stewart (family changed spelling to Steward and Stuard) born 1855 in Hamilton, Monroe County, Mississippi, married Alice Langford, born 23 May 1868 in Misissippi.  Their children:  Preston Stewart born about 1883 in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi, Maude Stewart, born 10 Nov 1884 in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi, Ethel Stewart, born about 1886 probably in Tupelo, Lee Co., MS, Wyatte Jennings Stewart born about 1895 in Texas and Ernest Edward Stewart born 13 Jul 1895 in Montfort, Navarro County, Texas.  (The story is that the Stewart family changed the spelling to Steward during the war with the states, some went back to the original spelling and some kept Steward some in Texas use Stuard).   Contact kathylonghurst@aol.com   12-01
