Hall, Kelley--Searching "Hall" Surname. Bather Hall born 1855; married Lisa Ellin Kelley born 1856; children: Annie Hall, Jannie Hall, and William Green Hall. I have been looking for any information about Bather's father. Bather was born in AL, so I would guess that his father is from AL as well, (but I don't know for certain). The family later moved to Monroe County, MS. I would appreciate any help you might have. Thanks in advance. Thank you, Diana. v.pollock@comcast.net 06-04

Cockerham2, Fisher, Walker--I have a C.W. Cockerham, legatee of John Fisher who was the former Justice of the Peace in Monroe Co. In 1869, C.W. Cockerham sold his share of inherited property along with the rest of the Fisher family in Pontotoc Co. [later Lee Co.]. I believe this person will be Charles W. Cockerham, son of William E. Cockerham and Ann A. Fisher. It appears that Ann is one of two newly discovered daughters of John Fisher and Martha Ann Walker. I'm hoping that someone may have more light on this connection. Peterson--My great-grandfather, Nelson Peterson, his wife Sophia Peterson and their children George Peterson, Phillip Peterson and Venda/Veneva Peterson were in MS in 1870. I found them in the 1870 census records. They had another child, Minnie Peterson, in 1875 while they were still in MS. In the 1880 IL census I found Sophia and the 4 children, but Nelson wasn't listed so they were either divorced or he died while they were in MS. In a 1885 city directory for Rock Island, IL, I found Sophia listed as the widow of Nels G. Peterson. Why would someone come to Monroe County, MS in the late 1860's? Would there be a record of Minnie's birth available? I know that the state of MS didn't start keeping these records until 1912 but I am wondering if there would be a record with the county clerk. Also, if Nelson died while they were in MS would the county have a record of his death? Are there any microfilm copies of any of the papers that were in print during the period of 1870 to 1880? I sure would like to find more information about this family group. Larry Peterson, llaran@earthlink.net 11-03

Cotton Gin Port--I am writing a book about my Mother born 1890 & died 1992. Her father & grandfather lived in Marshall County on the Memphis Cotton Gin Port Rd. that led from Memphis evidently to Monroe County. Evidences of the road are evident in places and a local surveyor has a copy of the original government survey in 1834. I'm trying to learn more of this road and Cotton Gin Port. Can you direct me to some resources? Thank You. jpower2@midsouth.rr.com 12-02
Daniel/Daniels--I am searching for Marshall W. Daniel(s) and his wife Frances (_____) Daniel(s). They are listed in the 1850 Monroe County MS census along with their two sons Lewis Charles Daniel(s) and John F. Daniel(s). They are my g-g-grandparents and a family Bible says that Marshall died in AL. But I am also considering the possibility of his death in MS since Monroe County is so close to AL. Lewis Charles went west to Texas and it is not known to us what happened to John F. There is speculation that some of this family went to Brazil with the Confederados after the Civil War. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much. Gail Newman. VGPN@aol.com 11-02

Stewart/Steward/Stuard, Burt, Cockerham--William John Stewart, born 1769 in South Carolina married Nancy Ann Burt in 1809 (Old 96 district). They had 10 children, the last 3 were born in Monroe County Mississippi. See the STEWART website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~stewartclanscms Children: Malinda, James F., George Washington (used STEWARD - moved to Texas), Moody Burt, William Jr. (my line), Anderson, John Robert, Francis Marion and Lafayette. This STEWART family is well documented in the Monroe County Mississippi History Book, I have been told, how can I purchase a copy of this book? This family changed the spelling of their name to STEWARD during the war with the states so it wouldn't sound so Southern, I was told. In Texas the William STEWART Jr. family use the spelling STUARD. Other related names of this family: Tedford, Langford, Seeley, Yacombe, Cain, Egger and Thomas. William John Stewart married 2nd to Sarah Cockerham in 1843, they had 3 children, Ardella, Artellia and James Monroe Stewart. In Texas (my line) the related names are: Wiley, Nelson, Andrews, Taylor, McCall, Barnes, Richards, Slay, Smith, Grainger, Thompson and Fendley. Kathy Longhurst. pklonghurst@juno.com
